a. Brushing:

  • Brush at least twice daily i.e. one in the morning after waking up & second at night before you go to sleep.
  • Always use soft or ultra soft tooth brush & replace your toothbrush with newer one after every three to four months.
  • Ideal brushing time is two to three minutes. Longer brushing time & hardbrushing can damage your enamel.

b. Flossing:

  • Floss your teeth once a day. Flossing gets rid of food & plaque between the teeth where sometimes your tooth brush can not reach. Floss between each as well as behind the back teeth.

c. Rinsing:

  • Rinse your mouth after every meal. One can also use antiseptic mouthwash once a day to kill bacteria that cause plaque & early gum disease. Swish the mouthwash in your mouth for 30 to 60 seconds.

Visit your dentist at least once in six months. To maintain healthy teeth & gums, it is important to have regular checkups. You should visit your dentist immediately in case of painful teeth or if you have a pain in mouth or in case of bleeding/swollen gums.

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Accumulation of plaque & tartar on the teeth leading to gingivitis & periodontitis
  • Habit of tobacco chewing & smoking
  • Consumption of high amount of Tea/Coffee
  • Mouth dryness
  • Indigestion
  • Hormonal Imbalances

b. Preventive measures:

  • Maintenance of good oral hygiene is the key factor to bad breath. Get your teeth cleaned at least once in a six months at a dental clinic.
  • Always use soft or ultra soft tooth brush & replace your tooth brush with newer one after every three to four months.
  • Drinking high amount of water speeds up the process of cleaning harmful bacteria and debris from the gaps between your teeth.
  • Avoid Consumption of high amount of Tea/Coffee.
  • Avoid smoking & other tobacco products.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption as alcohol can lead to dry mouth which ultimately leads to bad breath.
  • Chew sugar less gum. Doing so 20 minutes after a meal can help with increase in saliva flow.
  • Use antiseptic mouthwash for rinsing your mouth twice daily. These can give you freshness & avoid bad breath.
  • Check whether your digestive system is working well or not. If not, concentrate on proper digestion first.
  • Visit your dentist at least once in six months to maintain healthy teeth. Gingivitis and periodontitis are the main causes of bleeding gums. The main leading factor for gingivitis and periodontitis is too much accumulation of plaque and tartar around the teeth and gum lining.
  • To maintain healthy teeth & Sometimes hard brushing damages the gums leading to bleeding from gums.
  • Ideally scaling should be done once in every six months. The frequency might differ from patient to patient.
  • Scaling is very important for healthy teeth & gums. If one does not get scaling done regularly, they will face gum problems. Once Tartar formation takes place and gums start receding, teeth become loose and it may also fall out.
  • There might be effects like gingivitis, bad breath and effects on the heart too.
  • Scaling never damage teeth and gums. There are no side effects after scaling. However, Patient may experience sensitivity to hot and cold food or beverages after scaling for two to three days but this sensitivity is not permanent.
  • In most of the cases, missing tooth or teeth other than wisdom molar should be replaced once removed.
  • Once the tooth is extracted, the teeth adjacent to it and opposite to it may shift in that space.
  • These improper shifting of teeth affect our normal chewing pattern that’s why replacement of missing tooth/teeth is the best option.
  • In certain cases, where tooth/teeth are missing from long time & surrounding teeth have already shifted in that place, replacement is not advisable. Hence, you are advised not to delay tooth replacement once it is removed.
  • Maintaining good oral hygiene through brushing and flossing of your teeth is one of the most effective way to prevent tooth decay.

  • Generally, we start correction of irregularly placed teeth (Mal-alignment of teeth) by orthodontic treatment once the person/child* gets all the permanent teeth in his/her oral cavity.
